Honest answers to questions members actually ask.
If you're reading this, you're probably one of two people.
You're either someone who hasn't joined the Valor Provisions Steakholder Membership yet — and you've got a question or two that haven't been answered to your satisfaction. Fair. Most people who join us read something like this page before they pull the trigger.
Or you've already joined, and you're here because something I sent you in the welcome series pointed you back. Also fair. The same questions come up at month one, month six, and month twenty. Members ask them, members' spouses ask them, and members' parents ask them when they're trying to explain why they joined.
Either way, this page is for you. Below are the questions I get most about Valor Provisions and the Steakholder membership. I'm answering them the way I'd answer them to your face — at the grocery store, at an event, in my inbox. No marketing language. No legal hedging. The honest version.
If something I answer here brings up a new question, hit reply on any email I've sent you, or use the contact form at the bottom of the page. I read every one personally.
Table of Contents
Is the farm membership a subscription?
No. And I want to be specific about what that means, because I know "not a subscription" has been weaponized by enough companies that the phrase has lost meaning.
Here's what "not a subscription" means at Valor:
One charge for the membership. $250 for the lifetime tier, or $99 for the annual. Either way, that's a single transaction on a single day. Not recurring, not auto-billed, not anything else.
No mystery box. We will never ship you meat you didn't choose. We don't curate a monthly selection. We don't pick what's in your freezer.
No forced cadence. You order whenever you want — once a month, once a year, or never. The membership doesn't require you to spend anything beyond the original membership fee.
No silent term changes. If we ever introduce a subscription option in the future, members would have to opt in. We don't change the deal on you without telling you.
What the membership IS, is a one-time fee that unlocks access to the marketplace at member pricing for life (or for the year, if you went with annual). After that, you shop on your terms. Same way you shop anywhere else. Just at better prices, from named American farms, with no driving and no standing in line.
The reason we built it this way is simple. My family wouldn't have signed up for the box-of-the-month model. I wouldn't have. So we built the company we'd want to buy from.
If we ever change the model, you'd have to opt in. We don't do silent upgrades or terms-of-service revisions that change the deal on you. That's not how I want to run this company.
Is the Steakholder membership actually worth $250?
Depends on the household. I'd rather give you an honest framework than a marketing answer.
Here's how to think about it:
If you buy high-quality meat for your family every week or two, there's a good chance the membership will become one of the best values in your kitchen. Every new member receives a $100 sampler, which immediately offsets a large portion of the Lifetime Membership cost. From there, members unlock pricing on proteins sourced directly from American farms and ranches with standards and transparency that go well beyond what you'll typically find at the grocery store. If you're already shopping at premium retailers or seeking out local farms, you'll likely find the value isn't just in the pricing—it's in having trusted producers, exceptional quality, and transparent sourcing all in one place.
If you buy meat occasionally — once a month or less — the math gets tighter. The annual ($99) might be a better starting point. You get the same benefits with no long-term commitment. If a year in you've used the membership enough that the math works, upgrade to lifetime then. Most of our long-term members did exactly that.
If you only buy meat a few times a year, and grocery store cuts are working for your family — the membership probably isn't right for you, and that's a fine answer. I'd rather tell you that now than have you join, never use it, and feel like we took advantage. The membership is built for households that buy real meat regularly — and for that household, the math is plain.
We'd rather lose the sale than win it with bad math. If the membership doesn't pencil for your household, don't join. That's a real answer. The membership works for the right household — but it isn't for every household, and pretending otherwise would break the trust we've worked to earn.
Is the Steakholder for someone like me?
If you've made it this far through anything I've written, yes.
There's a perception floating around that Valor is a luxury brand or a wagyu collector's marketplace. It's not. We carry American Wagyu because we raise it well — but most of what's in the marketplace is everyday cuts for everyday families. Grass fed ribeye. Pasture-raised chicken. Heritage pork. Grass fed ground beef.
The Steakholder isn't JUST for foodies. It's for people that care about their health. People who care about quality. It is for people that care about the American farmer who has been decimated for five decades.
That's the only qualification. We don't gatekeep beyond that.
Here's who the membership is genuinely built for:
Families who want better protein on the dinner table without driving across town to find it.
Households with a freezer and a plan to use it.
People who've gotten tired of grocery store mystery meat — birth-country unclear, finish unclear, processor unclear.
Veterans, first responders, and patriots who want to support American farms because they understand what food sovereignty actually means.
Anyone who reads the news about American agriculture and wants to do something about it that isn't political.
And here's who it's NOT for, plainly:
Households that buy meat very infrequently. The math doesn't work for someone who only buys a steak twice a year.
Anyone looking for the absolute cheapest protein per pound. We're competitive on value, but we're not the cheapest option. We're not trying to be.
People who want a curated meat box delivered automatically. We don't do that, and we never will.
If the first list sounds like your household and the second list doesn't, you're our person.
What if Valor isn't around in five years and my lifetime membership is worthless?
Fair question. I'm going to answer it as straight as I can.
Valor Provisions is a real operating business. We have real revenue, real employees, real members, and real partner farms shipping real product every week to customers in all 50 states. We process orders out of our Kansas City facility. We pay taxes. We file paperwork. We are not a venture-backed pre-launch concept hoping to figure it out.
KC Cattle Company — the flagship ranch that built the foundation of Valor — has been in business since 2016. We've been featured in Food & Wine, Fortune, and the Wall Street Journal. We've sold our American Wagyu in all 50 states. We sell out flagship batches in days. The brand isn't going anywhere.
Could something happen? Of course. Any business can fail. I won't insult you by pretending otherwise. But the durability of the company is one of the things we think about most, and the data tells us we're on the right side of the trend — DTC American protein has been growing for five straight years and consolidation in conventional meatpacking is making our value proposition stronger, not weaker.
If you'd rather hedge anyway, here's the structural answer:
Start with the $99 annual membership. Same benefits, no long commitment. After a year of using it, you'll know whether the math works for your household. Most of our long-term members upgraded to the lifetime tier in their second year, after they'd seen the model deliver. That's a perfectly reasonable path, and it's how I'd advise a skeptical family member to start.
If you'd rather hedge, start with the annual. Most lifetime members upgrade in their second year, after they've seen the model deliver. The annual is the same membership, same benefits, just one year at a time.
A few more questions members ask
These come up less often than the four above, but often enough to address here.
Can I share my membership with my spouse?
Yes. The membership is by household, not by individual. Your spouse can place orders, your kids can place orders, your in-laws who live with you can place orders. We don't police it.
Can I gift the membership?
Yes. We have a gift option at checkout — buy a Steakholder membership for a parent, sibling, friend, or anyone else, and they'll get the welcome email and the $100 sampler. Popular at the holidays, for retirement gifts, and for new homeowners with their first chest freezer.
What if I move? Do you ship everywhere?
We ship to all 50 states from our Kansas City facility, including Alaska and Hawaii. Same flat shipping rate to the lower 48 ($22, or free over $250).
What if I'm not happy with the cuts when they arrive?
We've shipped tens of thousands of orders. When something goes wrong — wrong cut, freezer burn, shipping damage — we replace it or refund it. No fight. Email contactus@valorprovisions.us with the order number and we handle it.
One thing though. Most people have spent their whole lives buying meat from a grocery store that prioritizes uniformity and margin over quality. Not all meat is supposed to be the same color. The grocery store does that with gas. You can refreeze a thawed product. And please don't argue with me about choice, prime, or BMS — I promise I've done more meat gazing than you. We are not a company where the customer is always right. Sometimes you're wrong. Sometimes we're wrong. We always make the latter right. Don't be mean to my employees though, or I will fire you as a customer.
Can I cancel?
There's nothing to cancel with the lifetime membership — the membership is a one-time fee, not a subscription. If you joined on the annual tier and you don't want to renew, we made it easy to cancel in your account or by contacting our team. If you joined on the lifetime tier, you're a member for life; there's no recurring charge to cancel.
That's actually useful for me to know.
Use the contact form at the bottom of the page or email pat@valorprovisions.us directly. I read every message that comes in. If your question is good enough to be on this page, we'll add it here.
If the answers above made sense and you're ready, the membership is below. If you'd rather think it through more, that's fine too — the membership will be here when you're ready.
